Help Topics

This program can be used to discover, configure, and monitor devices on a TCP/IP network.

Searching:

In order to discover devices on the network, you must click on the "Search..." button, and specify the network(s) you would like to search on. See the section on the Discover Devices Dialog for more information.

Monitoring:

The "Monitor..." button allows you to monitor the devices on the network for network errors. Only those devices that are configured and displayed in the list of devices found and have valid deviceType will be monitored. It is not possible to monitor the network of an unconfigured device, you must first assign it an IP address, see Configuring Devices for more information. You can filter the device list in order to choose the devices that you want to monitor. Once you have started monitoring the devices, the status icons will change to reflect the current status of each device. For more information on what each status icon means, see the Device Status section. For more information on how to start monitoring, see the section on the Monitor Devices Dialog.

IP Address Assignment:

If you would like to assign an IP address and mask to a device, or change a devices existing IP address and mask, click on the Assign IP button. This will pop up an Assign IP Dialog that will allow you to permanently change the address stored on the device.

Device Status:

The following icons are used to describe the status of a device:

Device is unconfigured and does not have a valid IP address.
Device is configured, and nothing is being monitored.
Device is configured, network connection is ok, and the device network status is(are) not being monitored.
Device is configured, and there is problem with the network connection.

If you would like more detailed status information, you can double click on a device in the list of devices found. This will launch a web browser if the device supports HTML.

Browse Devices:

If you would like to change the configuration settings for a device  or checking for device status, just select the device from the list of devices that were found, and press the "Browse..." button. The button will be disabled if the device selected is currently unconfigured. A web browser will be launched to the configuration page, and the user can configure and check the status of the device via internet.

Filtering the Device List:

There are two ways to filter the list of devices found. You can use a device filter to filter the list based on the devices properties, or you can use the status filter to filter the list based on the devices status. For more information on how to create a device filter, see the Add Device Filter Dialog section. The status filter contains two checkboxes: Show Configured Devices and Show Unconfigured Devices. There will be two additional checkboxes if you are currently monitoring the devices: Show Devices With Errors, and Show Devices Without Errors.

Other Options:

The following options can be selected from the Options menu:

Clear Device List

Default Settings

Discover Devices Dialog

Select the subnet(s) that you would like to search for devices on. You can use the Add and Edit buttons to add a new subnet to the list or change an existing one, see the Add Subnet Dialog section for more information. The local subnet is added automatically for you, and cannot be deleted. If you choose to delete or edit an existing subnet, all devices with references to that subnet will be deleted, and any filters using that subnet will be changed. Click on the OK button when you are done to start the search.

Add Subnet Dialog

The add subnet dialog is used to create a new subnet. It contains the following fields:

Subnet Netid

Subnet Mask

Subnets Default Router

Monitor Devices Dialog

Poll Time

Assign IP Address Dialog

This dialog is used to assign an IP address to a device. Just fill in the IP address and subnet mask that you want to assign to the unit and click on assign. This assignment will permanently change the IP address of the device.

Add Device Filter Dialog

This dialog is used to create a filter for the list of devices that were found. The following sections describe each tab:

Add Device Filter - Models

The Models tab allows you to filter devices based on the model type. A list of known models will be displayed in the Available Models list. Press the Add>> button to move the selected models to the Selected Models List. Only the models in the Selected Models list will be displayed in the list of devices found. If you want to show all the models, selected the Show All Models radio button.

Add Device Filter - Subnets

The Subnets tab allows you to filter devices based on the subnet it belongs to. A list of known subnets will be displayed in the given listbox. Select the subnets you want to see devices on from the listbox, or selected the Show All Subnets radio button to show all the subnets. If you select all the subnets in the listbox, any new subnets added to the program later on will not be included in the filter. If you want to add a subnet that does not yet exist, click the Add Subnet button to bring up the Add Subnet Dialog.

Note: If an entry exists for the local subnet that was added using the Add Subnet button, it will be treated differently than the local subnet entry that is automatically added for you (i.e. "local"). This means, devices that were found by using the "local" subnet entry in a search will be displayed when "local" is selected, and devices that were found in a search using the entry added by Add Subnet will be displayed when that entry is selected.

Add Device Filter - IP Addresses, Locations, Subnets, Product Label

These tabs allow you to filter devices based on the given properties. A text field for entering the property is displayed along with the Add>> and Remove<< buttons. Enter a new item and click on Add>> to add it to the list, or select an existing item in the list and click on Remove<< to remove it. If you don't want to filter on the given Property, just select the Show All XXXX radio button.
